She was a part of the FX crime comedy Fargo's first season. Fargo was based on the Coen Brothers' 1996 film of the same name. It starred Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman as well as Bob Odenkirk. Tolman received praise for her portrayal of Minnesota Police Officer Molly Solverson. Vanity Fair said that Tolman "calmly took over" the show. Critics' Choice Television Award, Best Supporting Actress (Movie/Miniseries) and Golden Globe nominations were announced for Tolman's role. Tolman was given the role of a guest on two episodes as romance novelist Abby Berman on The Mindy Program the same year. In 2015, Tolman was a supporting character in Michael Dougherty's comedy horror film Krampus. In the wake of her breakout performance in Fargo, Tolman declined several part-time roles, including mothers, wives and best friends, looking for a more unusual role. Tolman was cast on ABC's Downward Dog based off the Animal Media Group webseries. The show lasted for one year. Tolman starred on the ABC drama, Emergence. The show premiered the 24th of September, 2019 but ended the show after just one season, on May 21, 2021, even though Tolman tweeted it was a success with "pretty excellent" ratings. Guest appearances she made in the NBC show NBC Good Girls were also mentioned as sources. She was a part of 2021's Alma Filcott on the second season of Why Women Kill and Natalie Green in the book the Facts of Life, of Live in Front of a Studio Audience the third edition.
